Ann Arbor Ultimate

Winter 2023 Friday Mixed Division (Mixed)

Cap-and-Fill Format

This division follows our Cap-and-Fill format. After registration closes, this division will be split into two; one for mixed play (with 5-7 of each matching preference per team) and one for open play. Our goal is to accommodate as many players as possible while organizing a format that allows all players to participate to their full desire.

How does it work?

  • All registrations are placed into one pool and the waitlist will be managed manually by the league directors.
  • Splitting into 2 divisions will require that the number of registrations can support 4, 6, 8, or 12 teams. Otherwise, the division will fall back to our default Co-Rec format (all gender matching preferences are distributed evenly).
  • The mixed division will reserve 5-7 spaces per team for woman-matching players.
  • Remaining spaces in the mixed division will be filled with man-matching players. Once spaces are filled for the mixed division, all man-matching players will be placed into the open division.

How can I ensure I get place in a specific division?

There is a prompt in the registration process for you to indicate a preference of which division you end up in. This does not guarantee one or the other, but will help when splitting the division. All responses for mixed will be considered for the mixed division (depending on space and grouping situation). All other responses (e.g. "Open" or blank) will be place into the open division automatically.

If you are a woman-matching player, you will be placed in the mixed division unless you indicate a preference for the open division.

If you are a man-matching player, you will be placed into the mixed division (space permitting) when one of the following criteria is met:

  • You are in a group with a woman-matching player, 1:1.
  • You indicate a preference for the mixed division, and there are spaces remaining after placing all women and their groups (based on registration payment timestamp). Please note, groups with two men will not make it unless BOTH members qualify.

Rule Modificatons

This division will play using the USAU 11th edition rule set with our recreational division rule modifications. Please see our rules page for more information.

Gender Matching

At the fields, captains should strive to find a balance that is equitable to all gender-matching preferences. If there is a large imbalance of players (of one gender or overall), often the best solution is for one team to sub someone over to the other for the game (perhaps switching at half). Note that match-ups on the line can be assigned based on ability; a player does not need to match up with a player of the same gender matching preference.

The east end-zone (farthest from the entry) will be considered the "gen-zone". At the start of each point, the team that is at the "gen-zone" must choose the gender matchup ratio. This process applies for the entire game (the "Gen-zone Decides Rule").

Other Details

As with all ultimate games, the emphasis in this league will be on high spirit, great exercise, and fun for both new and experienced players. Play hard, but play nice. And remember, violence, be it physical or verbal, is never acceptable and will get you suspended.

  • In this division, games are played to a time cap of 1 hour, 30 minutes. Since we are playing to a time cap, games can end mid-point. It is up to the game captains to call last point and call the point off if it is not finished in time. When your game time is up, please take any huddles off the field so the next group can start. This is especially important if the next group is not Ann Arbor Ultimate-related.
  • Bring white and team-colored (or a dark if you cannot match your team color) shirts, water, and cleats.
  • After the games do a cheer for the other team. This can be a quick "Great game!", a song with modified lyrics, it a haiku, an interpretive dance, or a massive game of rock paper scissors. We've seen all of these done quite well. Show good spirit, this is ultimate.
  • There is no alcohol or gum allowed on or near the fields.

Most of all, have fun! Any questions, comments, or concerns can be directed to your captains, or to league organizers by emailing

Captains are highly appreciated, and play for a discount. Just put a 1 or 2 in the "How Much I'd Like to Be a Captain" portion of your registration. As we form teams we'll choose captains based on experience, team balance, etc. If you're chosen, you'll have to come to the captains meeting, send emails to your teams to get them psyched about the games, and do the usual captain job of helping new players and keeping the spirit on your team high. You don't have to be the best player on the team, but you do have to have spirit and energy! Captains make this league work, so if you've been playing for a few seasons, think about joining the ranks of the captains.

Upon fulfilling their duties at the end of the season, captains receive a registration refund of $40.
