Coaches

  • Coach Gavin LaRose started playing ultimate several decades ago, and in the intervening years has played recreationally, with leagues, and on club teams. He has captained league and club teams, and loves ultimate as a game with unique spirit and a welcoming philosophy. He brings extensive ultimate frisbee skills and playing experience to the team, as well as a great sense of humor to keep players having fun on the field and the sidelines.
  • Coach Elizabeth Koschmann captained the Vicious Circles - Wesleyan University's women's ultimate frisbee team, and then captained or played on recreational teams across the U.S. She brings to practice a true love of all things ultimate -- the game, the vibe, and the motivation it offers to get outside and enjoy summer weather!

Play Format

This program will be capped at 40 people to ensure that everyone can get lots of instruction and playing time during scrimmages.

All practices will start with 20-30 mins of skill development and teambuilding, followed by time for scrimmaging (plus lots of water breaks to stay cool and hydrated).

This will be run using our co-rec format. This means that each point will feature both women-matching players and man-matching players on the field at one time. All youth players are welcome regardless of their gender matching preference, athletic ability, skill level, or knowledge of ultimate!

What Do You Need to Bring Each Week?

Players should come to each practice with:

  • Cleats, running shoes, or sneakers (cleats are recommended, soccer cleats work great)
  • Ann Arbor Ultimate is hoping to provide jerseys for each participant. If shirts are delayed, or a player's shirt is unavailable, please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt (for scrimmaging). Participants who register after the deadline will not receive a shirt.
  • A large water bottle, especially on hot days. Water is unfortunately not available at the field site.
  • If you use an inhaler or EpiPen, please bring it with you!

Rule Modifications

This division will play using our recreational division rule modifications, based on the latest rule set offered by USA Ultimate. Please see our rules page for more information.

Other Details

Practices will be canceled in the event of thunderstorms/lightning, or sufficiently poor air quality. Practice July 17 is tentative depending on availability of a coaching staff. Notification of cancellation will be sent to the division email group by 3:00pm on the day of practice.

Ann Arbor Ultimate, in compliance with Michigan state law, is required to obtain a statement signed by each youth athlete (i.e. under age 18 on the start date/first game) and a parent or guardian of the youth athlete acknowledging receipt of the educational materials on the signs/symptoms and consequences of concussions. More information can be found on our concussion compliance page. Ann Arbor Ultimate officials will be in contact prior to the first practice to kick off the collection process.

As with all ultimate games, the emphasis in this league will be on high spirit, great exercise, and fun for both new and experienced players. Play hard, but play nice. And remember, violence, be it physical or verbal, is never acceptable and will get you suspended.

  • Do not damage the fields. If we do, we will be fined heavily and not allowed to play again. If you're causing more than the normal wear and tear because the fields are wet, you have to stop. With regards to litter, leave the fields in better condition than you found them. Report serious damage. The better care we take of the fields, the more we'll get to use them.
  • After the games do a cheer for the other team. This can be a quick "Great game!", a song with modified lyrics, a haiku, an interpretive dance, or a massive game of rock paper scissors. We've seen all of these done quite well. Show good spirit, this is ultimate.

Most of all, have fun! Any questions, comments, or concerns can be directed to your coaches, or to league organizers by emailing directors@annarborultimate.org. If you would prefer to anonymously report a situation, please use our Anonymous Grievance/Feedback Form
