Formats for Play

Cap and Fill

Cap and Fill is a way of formatting play to accommodate as many players as possible while organizing a format that allows all players to participate to their full ability and desire. After registration closes, based on the number of woman-matching players registered, this division may be split into two; one division will host all women-matching players plus a number of man-matching players, while the other will host only man-matching players. As a fallback in the case that the division does not receive enough woman-matching player registrations to split, the division will fall back to our Co-Rec format (all gender matching preferences distributed evenly amongst teams).

Competitive

Competitive divisions are intended to offer a high level of play for experienced players. These divisions are suggested for those that have played club or college ultimate for at least one year. Typically, teams are selected via draft process rather than our normal team generation process. While safety and spirit are still top priorities, competition and intensity can be additional focuses.

Co-Rec

The Co-Rec format will form as many teams as possible in one division, distributing all gender-matching preferences evenly among teams. Typically, teams will be made up of 10-30% woman-matching players.

This is Ann Arbor Ultimate's default format.

Mixed

Mixed divisions (also known as "50-50") are where there is an equal balance of gender-matching-players.

Open

Open division play is considered to be any division with no explicit target gender-matching balance for teams. Generally, Open divisions consist of primarily man-matching players, but woman-matching players are welcome to participate.

Women's

Women's division play consists of 100% woman-matching players. As part of its gender equity efforts, Ann Arbor Ultimate aims to provide an outlet for woman-matching players to have a welcoming and safe environment to play ultimate (especially for new players).
